IMAP -vs- POP3

Many companies are still using antiquated POP3 email services even through the IMAP4 standard has been available since 1999 or earlier. IMAP is widely regarded as being superior to POP3 in every respect. Why haven't most email providers made these new services available to you ? Because IMAP requires storage of the clients email folders - providers save money by not providing this service.

 

Here is a list of things that IMAP fixes for you.

 
  • Once you read an email, it can only be read on that same computer. IMAP allows you to read email on any computer ( even your folders of previously read mail ) just by logging in. This is essential if you need to read email from home or while traveling. You get almost all the advantages of running your own Exchange server without the expense.

  • POP3 downloads all messages in order. If someone sends you a 5Mb attachment, there is no way to skip that message and read an important one. With IMAP you see just the "subject" line of each message, and YOU control which order the messages are downloaded.

  • You control your own "blacklist" per mailbox. So email can be rejected before it even reaches your email box. Blacklisting or Whitelisting works on top of the existing spam and virus filters - and is configurable by each individual mailbox owner, or by the domain as a whole.
 

You can continue to use a recent copy of Outlook to read your IMAP email, but for enhanced security we recommend using the free Thunderbird email client. The US Government and others recommend avoiding the use of Internet Explorer and Outlook because of Microsoft scripting problems.

Webmail on an IMAP based email system is full featured, allowing you to read both new and old (archive) messages. Webmail on POP3 systems is limited to reading new mail only.

Accidently deleted email can be recovered from nightly or weekly backups. There is an extra charge per event with this service.
